also like literally, yes, māori society had woman chiefs (despite the racist + biologically essentialist way anon posed that question). this is Rangi Topeora, a rangatira (you people translate this word as ‘chief’) of Ngāti Toa and Ngāti Raukawa. here’s some info on her from the website of the painter who made this portrait of her, Gottfriend Lindauer:

Known to have had four marriages and many other relationships, she had one son, Matene Te Whiwhi, who became chief of both the Ngāti Toa and Ngāti Raukawa iwi.  She also had a daughter, Rakapa Kahoki, who was a ‘notable composer’ taking after her mother, whose waiata are still sung today. 1 As well as love songs and those with historical references, Topeora composed ‘perfectly diabolical cursing songs’ directed at her enemies.2 She fought in many battles and was a noted orator who sought and was given the right to speak at meetings.

Topeora called herself Kuini Wikitoria (Queen Victoria) and her husband, Arapeta (Albert) when she was christened by Bishop Selwyn in the 1840s.3 Topeora was one of only five women to sign the Treaty of Waitangi, which she did at Kapiti on 14 May 1840

an interesting thing about that last paragraph is that, because Māori society didn’t historically really have gendered names, for decades it was just assumed that all the tiriti signatories were men. because ~native chiefs were men~ right? but if you actually check the genealogical records, it turns out we had a lot of women in positions of authority. we now know at least 15 women signed te tiriti - its likely there are more.

“Sure, I’m sad, but I’m not looking to soothe that sadness by replacing it with a new relationship. Women are allowed to be sad, and they’re allowed to be single, and they don’t need to hear that one day a man is going to make it all go away by telling her she is good enough again. She’s good enough as she is.”
